One Piece TCG: Kaido and Big Mom Deck Strategy Guide
Kaido and Big Mom — the two Emperors of the Sea — represent the upper tier of power in the One Piece universe. In the TCG, their decks deliver on that promise: Kaido plays the most imposing individual characters in the game while Big Mom builds an engine that becomes nearly impossible to deplete.
This guide covers both leaders, their core strategies, and how to pilot them optimally.
Part 1: Kaido — The Strongest Creature in the World
Leader Overview
Kaido is a Green/Purple dual-colour leader with 5 life.
Leader ability: Once per turn during your main phase, if you have 10 DON!! in your DON!! area, you may rest 1 DON!! to give one of your characters +2000 power until the end of turn.
The mechanic: Kaido's ability only activates at maximum DON!! (10). This means you're incentivised to reach the DON!! cap as fast as possible, then use the ability to pump key characters into unblockable power ranges.
Why Play Kaido?
-
Biggest bodies: Beast Pirate characters have the highest raw power numbers in the game. A Kaido build can have 3–4 characters on the field with 7000+ power each.
-
Green ramp: The Green colour access means you can hit 10 DON!! by turn 4–5, turning on Kaido's ability a full turn earlier than a 10-DON!! turn 5 opponent expects.
-
Inevitable pressure: Opponents cannot just "play around" a 9000-power character. They must have a specific answer.
Key Characters
King (The Wildfire) — 8 cost, 9000 power, Rush The single most powerful card in Kaido decks. Rush means he attacks immediately. 9000 power means almost nothing can trade with him cleanly. The cost is high, but Green ramp makes him reachable.
Queen (The Plague) — 7 cost, 8000 power, On Play: trash opponent's character with 5000 or less power King is the attacker. Queen is the removal piece. Together they form Kaido's two-card endgame.
Jack (The Drought) — 5 cost, 7000 power, Blocker A Blocker at 7000 power is almost impossible to profitably attack. Jack is your defensive wall until the large threats are deployed.
Yamato — 4 cost, 5000 power, Rush, adds DON!! when On Play The transition card. Yamato bridges early turns into the Kaido endgame. Her DON!! addition effect is exactly what Kaido needs to reach 10 DON!! quickly.
Turn-by-Turn Plan
Turns 1–3: Establish the board with low-cost Green characters. Use Green ramp events/characters to accelerate DON!! accumulation.
Turn 4: Play Yamato (5 cost, DON!! add). Reach 9–10 DON!!.
Turn 5 (10 DON!!): Kaido ability activates. Play Jack as a Blocker wall, deploy Queen to clear threats.
Turn 6+: King closes the game. Any character with Kaido's pump is at 9000+ power — nothing your opponent plays at reasonable cost can trade with it.
Kaido Weaknesses
Events that bypass power: Removal that doesn't involve combat (returning to hand, trashing directly) gets around Kaido's power advantage. Trafalgar Law's Room effect returns your 9000-power King as easily as a 3000-power character.
Blue decks: Blue control counters Kaido more than any other archetype. If you expect heavy Blue, consider adding your own hand return options to disrupt before Law decks fire.
Part 2: Big Mom — The Whole Cake Island Engine
Leader Overview
Charlotte Linlin (Big Mom) is a Yellow/Purple leader with 6 life.
Leader ability: When an opponent's character attacks and you block with a Homie character, add the top card of your deck to your life area.
The mechanic: Successfully defending with Homie characters literally adds life back to your total. You start with 6 (already higher than standard) and can accumulate 8–10+ life in a normal game.
Why Play Big Mom?
-
Life as a resource: In a game where the win condition is depleting 7 life, having 8–10 life forces opponents to deal substantially more damage than expected.
-
Engine durability: Even if you lose board presence, as long as you have Blocker Homies and life to spare, you're never completely out of the game.
-
Katakuri closes alone: Charlotte Katakuri is among the top 5 characters ever printed. One copy of Katakuri can close games.
Key Characters
Charlotte Katakuri — 9 cost, 10000 power, Blocker, DON!! effect: gain 2 life The best individual character in Yellow. At 9 cost, he's expensive. But with 10000 power, Blocker, and a life generation ability, a single Katakuri fundamentally changes the game state.
Charlotte Smoothie — 6 cost, 7000 power, adds card to life when entering play Another life addition piece. Combined with Big Mom's ability, Smoothie can add 2 life on the turn she's played (1 from entry, 1 if she blocks a Homie).
Prometheus — 2 cost, 3000 power, Homie type, Blocker Your early Homie blocker. Cheap, synergises with Big Mom's ability. Every game you want multiples.
Napoleon — 3 cost, 4000 power, Homie type, On Play draws card Homie with draw effect. Keeps your hand full while being the type Big Mom wants.
The Life Math
Standard starting life: 6
Turn 3 Smoothie: +1 life → 7 total
Three Prometheus blocks with Big Mom's ability: +3 life → 10 total
Your opponent needs to deal 10 life damage to win — nearly double what they'd need against a 5-life leader. In those circumstances, Luffy's "hit 7 life by turn 5" gameplan often falls short by 2–3 damage.
Big Mom Weaknesses
Direct trash effects: Cards that trash (destroy) characters from the field bypass Blocker interactions entirely, removing your Homie Blockers before they can activate Big Mom's ability.
DON!! starvation: Big Mom's life engine requires consistent DON!! investment. In early turns, you're sometimes forced to choose between playing Homie characters and holding DON!! for responses. Misjudging this balance loses games.
Luffy race: If Red Luffy gets aggressive starts and hits 4 life damage by turn 3, your life engine hasn't scaled yet. Luffy can win before Big Mom's full durability online. Against Luffy, mulligan aggressively for 2-cost Blockers.
Conclusion: Emperor vs. Emperor?
When Kaido meets Big Mom in a mirror of emperor archetypes, Kaido tends to win in long games. His raw power advantage means Big Mom's extra life requires even more life gains to be relevant. But Big Mom wins the "fair" games — ones where both players follow their curve — because she adds life faster than Kaido can reliably deal damage.
Both are excellent choices for players who want power and durability over pure speed.
