How to Build Your First One Piece TCG Deck

You've played through the starter deck. You understand the rules. Now you want to build something of your own — a deck that reflects your playstyle and the One Piece characters you love. This guide walks you through the complete deckbuilding process for One Piece TCG.

Step 1: Choose Your Leader

Your Leader is the foundation of everything. Leaders set:

  • Your colour(s) — which cards you can include
  • Your life total — how long you can survive
  • Your playstyle — whether you're aggro, control, or midrange
  • Your DON!! ability — your most reliable engine

Don't pick a Leader because you like the character. Pick a Leader whose game plan you want to execute.

Questions to ask:

  • Do I want to attack aggressively or play defensively?
  • Do I want to flood the board or use big individual characters?
  • Am I comfortable holding DON!! for reactive plays or do I prefer proactive turns?

Recommended for first-time builders:

  • Red Luffy (OP-01): Easiest to understand, powerful, well-documented
  • Green Yamato: Good for players who want to ramp and play big cards
  • Blue Law: Good for players who prefer controlling and responding

Step 2: Understand Your Leader's Win Condition

Before adding any cards, write down in one sentence what your deck wants to do to win.

Examples:

  • "I want to attack the opponent's leader for 7+ life before turn 6."
  • "I want to control the board with removal until I deploy a large character that can't be answered."
  • "I want to generate extra DON!! through Green ramp and play characters 2–3 turns ahead of curve."

Every card you evaluate should be measured against this win condition.

Step 3: The 50-Card Framework

A legal deck is exactly 50 cards. Here's a starting framework for most decks:

| Category | Count | Purpose | |----------|-------|---------| | Low-cost characters (1–3) | 16–20 | Early board presence, DON!! targets | | Mid-cost characters (4–6) | 12–16 | Midgame threats | | High-cost characters (7+) | 4–6 | Win conditions, finishers | | Events | 8–12 | Removal, draw, combat tricks | | Stage (optional) | 0–2 | Persistent bonuses |

Adjust ratios based on your archetype:

  • Aggro: More low-cost characters, fewer events
  • Control: Fewer characters, more events
  • Midrange: Balance between both

Step 4: Evaluate Characters

For each character card, ask:

Does it help my win condition?

If your plan is to flood the board with small Straw Hat crew members, a large Whitebeard character that doesn't share the Straw Hat type has poor synergy even if it's a powerful card on its own.

What's its power-to-cost ratio?

A rough guideline:

  • 1 DON!! cost: ~1000–3000 power
  • 2 cost: ~2000–4000 power
  • 3 cost: ~3000–5000 power
  • 4 cost: ~4000–6000 power
  • 5 cost: ~5000–7000 power

Cards that exceed this ratio are premium inclusions. Cards below it need strong effects to justify inclusion.

Does it have a useful keyword?

Key keywords and their value:

  • Rush: Can attack the turn it's played — extremely valuable for aggro
  • Blocker: Can defend even when rested — essential for control
  • Trigger: Free effect when revealed from life — high variance but high value
  • On Play: Effect triggers immediately — reliable

Step 5: Evaluate Events

Events are one-time effects. They're expensive relative to characters but provide power that characters can't.

Types of Events

Counter events: Used during the opponent's attack, these boost your character's or leader's defense by 2000. The most common event type. You want at least 8–10 counter cards in any deck.

Removal events: Trash (destroy) an opponent's character. Premium if they cost 1–3 DON!!, still good at 4–5.

Search events: Draw or look at top cards and select what to add to hand. Excellent for consistency.

Battle events: Play during combat for additional damage or defensive effects.

The Counter Card Minimum

Whatever your deck is doing, include at least 8 cards with a Counter value. Counter cards are the defensive backbone of any deck. Running fewer than 8 means your leader gets hit for life damage too often.

Step 6: Manage Your DON!! Curve

Since you accumulate 2 DON!! per turn, your deck should have cards to spend at each level:

  • Turn 1 (2 DON!!): 2-cost cards or attach 2 DON!! to leader
  • Turn 2 (4 DON!!): 4-cost card + free play
  • Turn 3 (6 DON!!): Big 6-cost character or multiple small plays
  • Turn 4+ (8–10 DON!!): Your expensive finishers

If your deck is top-heavy (many 5+ cost cards and few low-cost cards), your early turns will be awkward and opponents will set up while you wait to "come online."

Rule of thumb: At least 20 cards should be playable with 4 or fewer DON!!.

Step 7: Test and Refine

Build your 50-card list, then:

  1. Do 10 solo test draws: Draw 5 cards and ask "Can I play something meaningful on turn 1–2 with this hand?" If more than 5/10 hands are awkward, fix your curve.

  2. Play 10 games against a friend or the same starter deck: Note which cards you never want to play and which cards you wish you had 4 of.

  3. Make small changes: Replace 2–3 cards at a time, not 15. It's impossible to evaluate changes if you change too much at once.
