One Piece TCG: Best Crews and Factions Ranked
In One Piece TCG, every character has one or more Types — their crew affiliation. These aren't just flavour text. Type synergies form the backbone of competitive deckbuilding, with many cards having effects that trigger based on crew membership.
This guide ranks every major faction by the quality and depth of their card support.
Why Types Matter
Consider two 3-cost, 4000-power characters:
- Character A: "Straw Hat Pirates" type with no ability
- Character B: "East Blue" type with "Rush"
Character A might benefit from 8+ cards in your deck that say "if you have 5 or more Straw Hat characters in play, do X." Character B's Rush ability is self-contained but offers no compounding benefits.
Type synergies create a multiplier effect: assembling the right combination of same-type characters becomes greater than the sum of individual card values.
S Tier Factions
Straw Hat Pirates
Why S Tier: The single most supported type in One Piece TCG history. Luffy, Zoro, Nami, Usopp, Sanji, Chopper, Robin, Franky, Brook — 9 core crew members, each represented across multiple card versions and sets.
Best cards in the type:
- Luffy (all versions) — the engine
- Sanji Rush variants — turn-1 and turn-2 aggression
- Robin draw effects — card advantage in an aggressive shell
Core synergy: Most Straw Hat support cards scale with the number of Straw Hats in play. Running 20+ Straw Hat characters creates compounding bonuses by mid-game.
Leader synergy: OP-01 Luffy is purpose-built for this type. But even non-Luffy leaders in Red can run Straw Hats for their raw power.
Navy (Marines)
Why S Tier: The control faction. Navy cards have the best individual removal effects in the game. Sakazuki (Admiral Akainu) as a leader gave Navy the premier control leader, and the type's character pool includes some of the game's best defensive pieces.
Best cards in the type:
- Kuzan (Aokiji) — Blocker with removal effect
- Sengoku — Massive 9000-power finisher with On Play trap
- Koby — Low-cost Rush attacker with Navy synergy
Core synergy: Many Navy cards discount in cost when you have an established Navy board. A 5-cost character might cost 3 if you control 2 other Navy characters — efficient scaling.
A Tier Factions
Heart Pirates (Law's Crew)
Why A Tier: Small but elite card pool. Trafalgar Law (leader) + his crew creates the best tempo deck in Blue. Every Heart Pirate character has a meaningful effect and the type's Return mechanic is uniquely powerful.
Ceiling: In Law builds, Heart Pirates go S tier. Outside Law, the type is too small to support other leaders.
Beast Pirates (Kaido's Crew)
Why A Tier: Kaido's Big Mom merger faction. Beast Pirates are the biggest individual cards — their cost-to-power ratio exceeds other types at the high end. Playing a 7-cost 9000-power Beast Pirate with an On Play effect is a format-defining experience.
Weakness: High curve means Beast Pirate builds are slow to get going. Without Green ramp, they often lose to aggro before the engine online.
Big Mom Pirates
Why A Tier: Yellow life-gain faction. Charlotte family characters provide life protection and board persistence. Charlotte Linlin (Big Mom) as leader + her crew creates the most durable deck in the format.
Best card: Charlotte Katakuri — enormous stats, Blocker, and a DON!! activation effect that's nearly unbeatable in the late game.
B Tier Factions
Whitebeard Pirates
Massive power individual cards but the synergy package is weaker than S/A tier options. Whitebeard himself is an iconic finisher but the surrounding crew doesn't quite hit the same level.
Donquixote Pirates (Doflamingo's Crew)
Purple faction with unique DON!! cycling. Trebol, Pica, and Doflamingo create interesting DON!! loops but the ceiling hasn't been fully realised competitively.
Revolutionary Army (Dragon's Crew)
Sabo-centered builds with On Play triggers. Dragon and Sabo cards are excellent individually but the type lacks the depth of higher-tier factions.
C Tier Factions
Baroque Works (Crocodile's Crew)
Black removal suite but small type pool. The Baroque Works synergy cards are narrow and the faction support thins out quickly.
Roger Pirates
Legendary crew with some of the best flavour cards in the game, but the competitive synergy isn't there yet. Roger himself is a powerful finisher, but without type support the deck can't maintain board.
Multi-Type Considerations
Many characters have two types (e.g., "Straw Hat Pirates/Supernova"). These characters can trigger synergy cards for both types simultaneously.
Value pick: Luffy himself is listed as "Straw Hat Pirates/Supernova" in several versions. Running Supernova synergy cards in a Luffy deck gives you type bonus access without changing your character lineup.
Building Around a Faction
Once you identify your faction, look for:
- Type-lord: A character or event that gives bonuses based on your type count
- In-type Rush characters: Your early aggressive tools
- In-type Blocker characters: Your defensive backbone
- In-type search: Events that search for type-specific characters
If a faction has all four of these, it's a complete archetype. Straw Hat Pirates and Navy have all four — which is exactly why they're S tier.
