Grand Archive Floating Memory Deep Dive
The Floating Memory mechanic is unique to Grand Archive. No other TCG has a resource that floats between turns, accumulates, and pays for cards beyond normal mana limits. It's also the mechanic most misunderstood by new players — and most exploited by experienced ones.
What is Floating Memory?
When a card effect says "gain floating memory," you receive a resource that carries over to your next turn. Unlike normal memory resources (which reset each turn), floating memory accumulates.
Example: You have 4 memory in your pool, play a card that generates 2 floating memory, and end your turn. Next turn, you have your standard 4 memory plus 2 floating memory — effectively 6 resources for that one turn.
Why It's Powerful
The math is straightforward: turns where you have more resources than normal produce disproportionately more value. A turn with 6 memory instead of 4 doesn't just let you play a 6-cost card — it lets you play two 3-cost cards, or a 4-cost card and still react with 2 mana held open.
For Rai specifically, this enables what players call "float turns" — deliberately under-spending for 1–2 turns to build up a massive float for a single dominant turn.
The Float Turn Formula
Calculating when to deploy a float turn:
Effective resources on float turn = (normal memory) + (accumulated float)
A Rai player with 4 base memory who floats 2 mana for two consecutive turns has:
Turn 1: spend 2, float 2 Turn 2: 4 + 2 = 6, spend 4, float 2 Turn 3: 4 + 2 = 6 → deploy float turn, spend 6
The power turn at turn 3 lets you play a 6-cost card + use 1–2 mana for reactions.
Most opponents expect a 4-memory turn from you. A 6-memory turn is qualitatively different — the cards you can play at 6 aren't just "a bit bigger," they're an entirely different category of threat.
When NOT to Float
Floating memory is powerful but carries opportunity cost. The turns you spend building float are turns you're not applying pressure. Against aggressive champions:
- Lorraine at 20 life — don't float. Apply pressure. You cannot afford the tempo gap.
- Tristan with pet in play — the pet generates free damage each turn. Floating lets it deal free damage you could have blocked by being more proactive.
The cardinal rule: float against control, attack against aggro.
Float Memory in Deckbuilding
Cards that generate floating memory need to pay off. The threshold: a float-generating card should enable a play on the following turn worth at least 2 resources more than what you'd normally deploy.
Cards worth including for float synergy:
- Rai's Spirit Flask — generates 2 float on activation, combos with Rai's ability
- Ethereal Conduit — generates 1 float per spirit token spent
- Mana Surge — emergency float generator for reactive turns
Reading Your Opponent
Once opponents know you play Rai, they'll try to predict your float turns and play around them. Counter-counterplay:

Fake float — spend one mana below your maximum on a turn to suggest you're building float. Your opponent plays around a big turn that isn't coming. This frees you to float for real the following turn.

Float misdirection — float on defence. Spend it on reaction cards rather than the massive offensive turn they expected. Their overcautious blocking leaves them behind on tempo.
Floating Memory rewards reading your opponent almost as much as it rewards understanding the mechanic itself.
