Diana the Archer: Mastering Arrow Timing in Grand Archive
Diana the Huntress is not for beginners. Her core mechanic — arrow timing — adds an entirely new decision axis to Grand Archive combat that doesn't exist with any other champion. In exchange for that complexity, she offers one of the highest skill ceilings in the game. Pilot her correctly and you'll win games that look impossible on paper.
The Arrow Timing Mechanic
Diana's core ability: at any point during the combat window (after blockers are declared but before damage is resolved), she can fire an Arrow — a targeted damage effect that deals damage equal to the printed value of the equipped arrow card.
This creates a window that works differently from every other champion:
- Other champions attack → damage resolves → reaction window opens
- Diana attacks → blocker declared → arrow window opens → arrow resolves → then original attack damage resolves
The key insight: arrows resolve before the attack damage. This means arrows can:
- Kill a blocker before it blocks
- Remove the opponent's champion life before their reaction lands
- Set up unexpected lethal by front-loading damage
Understanding the Combat Window
A complete Diana attack sequence looks like this:
- Diana declares attack
- Defending player declares blocker (or doesn't block)
- Diana player may fire an arrow (choosing a target, including the blocker)
- Arrow damage resolves
- Original attack damage resolves
- Reaction window opens
Scenario 1: Killing the blocker with an arrow Diana attacks with a 5/5 card. Opponent blocks with a 2/3. Diana fires a 3-damage arrow at the blocker. Arrow resolves: blocker now has 0/3 → the blocker is destroyed before blocking the attack. Original attack now hits the champion face for 5 instead of being partially blocked.
Scenario 2: Pre-lethal setup Opponent is at 7 life. Diana attacks for 4. Opponent has a combat trick that heals 2. Diana fires a 4-damage arrow at the champion before the attack resolves. Arrow = 4 damage (champion goes to 3). Then attack resolves for 4 = lethal. The healing trick was irrelevant because the game ended before it was used.
Arrow Equipment
Your equipped arrows are a critical deckbuilding decision. Key arrow cards:
Silver-Tipped Arrow
- Cost: 2 memory
- Damage: 3
- Effect: Pierce (ignores armour)
The standard combat arrow. Pierce is extremely valuable — most reactive defensive tools reference armour, and bypassing it entirely is worth the extra cost.
Hunter's Bolt
- Cost: 1 memory
- Damage: 2
- Effect: None
The budget arrow. Low cost makes it easier to fire in the same turn you're also paying for an attack. Use this when memory is tight and you just need 2 damage early.
Tracking Shot
- Cost: 0
- Damage: 1
- Effect: Draw a card
The Lorraine-style cycling arrow. 0 cost means you can fire it on any attack without memory overhead. The card draw offsets the low damage for a net-positive use most of the time.
Widowmaker
- Cost: 3 memory
- Damage: 5
- Effect: If this kills a permanent, draw a card
This is Diana's premium removal arrow. It kills virtually any threat and the draw trigger on kill keeps your hand full. Best used on high-priority targets with 4 or fewer health.
Deck Construction Principles
Arrow Density
You want arrows to fire frequently. Aim for 12–15 total arrows in your deck across 3–4 different arrow types.
Attacks That Benefit from Arrow Support
Diana's best attacks have text like "if a permanent left play this turn, this deals +3 damage" or "if damage was dealt before this step, this has Speed." These are your premium cards.
Memory Management
Diana is memory-hungry. Between attack costs, arrow costs, and reactive cards, you can run dry quickly. Budget your turn carefully:
- Turns 1–2: Set up equipment, play a low-cost attack with a free arrow
- Turns 3–4: Premium attacks with arrow support
- Turns 5+: Close the game with Widowmaker setup
Defensive Cards in Diana
Diana is an aggressive champion but unlike Lorraine, she has a reactive playstyle through her arrow window. You can afford to play 10–12 defensive reaction cards without sacrificing pressure, because your arrow fires reactively anyway.
Matchup Notes
vs. Lorraine
Diana vs. Lorraine is a race. Lorraine attacks faster in the early turns. Diana wants to use early arrows to remove Lorraine's defensive equipment/permanents, shifting the damage race in her favour. Going wide with multiple small arrows and attacks in one turn is Diana's best strategy here.
vs. Rai
Very favourable for Diana. Rai's float turns require him to tap memory during his turn. Diana's arrow fires on attack — usually during the Diana player's turn — which means Rai can't counter-trap with float triggers as easily. Diana can also fire arrows at Rai's float artifacts to break the engine.
vs. Silvie
Diana must kill the dragon. This is her priority. Use Widowmaker on the Dragon Whelp stage (4 damage kills a 2/3 whelp? actually, whelp has 2 health). A simple Hunter's Bolt is enough to kill the whelp if Silvie doesn't protect it. Once you eliminate the dragon, Silvie has no win condition and Diana wins on pressure.
vs. Merlin
Challenging. Merlin's spell chain is immune to your arrow timing — arrows don't interrupt spell chain resolution. Focus on aggressive pressure and don't try to disrupt the chain; try to race him to 0 life before the chain goes off.
Advanced Technique: The Double Arrow Turn
If Diana has equipped two different arrow types (possible with certain equipment builds), and both arrows are available, she can sometimes fire both in the same combat window. This requires:
- Two legal arrow cards in hand
- Enough memory to pay for both
- A trigger that re-opens the arrow window after the first arrow resolves
This is rare but produces enormous burst damage turns that opponents cannot predict or play around.
Diana Rating
Skill floor: Low — beginners will misuse the arrow window almost every turn
Skill ceiling: Extremely high — correct arrow timing produces win conditions that look like magic to opponents
Tournament viability: Strong in the hands of practiced pilots
If you want to put in the reps and master the most technical champion in Grand Archive, Diana rewards every hour of practice.
